The first eight axis deer arrived on Moloka‘i in 1868 and have since proliferated to extreme numbers. The year-round surplus of forage and lack of predators have caused this population to boom, disrupting our vulnerable ecosystem. The exotic axis deer’s small stature and sweet Hawaiian feed however make these wild deer a delicacy that is enjoyed locally and by chefs worldwide.
Pu'u O Hoku Ranch works under strict harvesting and processing practices to provide a USDA inspected and certified product that is truly unique and sustainable while providing ecological benefit to the land.
